I Can Read Things Myself

Grade 1 is the year when literacy begins to unlock independent discovery. Students strengthen decoding and connected reading while building confidence with whole numbers, measurement, time, money, observation, and simple experiments.

What students explore

  • Folktales, fairy tales, animals, farms, oceans, dinosaurs, weather, transportation, occupations, biographies, jokes, and poems
  • Place value, addition, subtraction, measurement, time, and basic money
  • Magnets, floating and sinking, plant growth, weather, and materials

Example experiences

  • Keep a one-week weather journal.
  • Test which objects float or sink.
  • Create a simple map of a familiar place.
  • Read a short nonfiction book and explain three facts learned.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS

  • 1.1.1.1 Decode regularly spelled grade-level words.
  • 1.1.1.2 Read connected text with improving accuracy and fluency.
  • 1.1.2.1 Identify characters, setting, sequence, and central events.
  • 1.1.3.1 Write several connected sentences about one subject.
  • 1.2.1.1 Represent and compare whole numbers.
  • 1.2.1.2 Add and subtract fluently within the expected grade range.
  • 1.2.3.1 Measure and compare length using appropriate units.
  • 1.3.1.1 Make a prediction and compare it with an observed result.

Mastery check

Students should read simple connected text with increasing independence, write a short sequence of related sentences, add and subtract reliably, read basic time and money, make a prediction, observe carefully, and explain what happened.
